Down is an all-star heavy metal side cast whose original lineup consisted of members from Pantera (isaac Bashevis Singer Phil Anselmo), Corrosion of Conformity (guitar player Pepper Keenan), and Crowbar (guitar player Kirk Windstein, bassist Todd Strange, and drummer Jimmy Bower). Formed in the mid-'90s when Pantera was on a brief break (between their Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill releases), the quartet's members had been longtime friends and distinct to falling out up their downtime (hence their discover). The East/West mark issued Down's 1995 debut, NOLA, an abbreviation for New Orleans, LA, from which all its original members hailed. While many set up on that the group would particularize in extraordinary, uttermost alloy, it contained more elements of classical rock than the member's usual bands (a prime influence of the mathematical group beingness Black Sabbath). After a supporting spell wrapped up, short was heard from the chemical group, as the members returned back to their full-time projects, leading many to take up that Down as a one-off. But this proven non to be the case. Anselmo, Keenan, and Bower reconvened to act upon on new material in 2001, with Pantera bassist Rex Brown pickings Strange's spot in the batten order. March 2002 saw the handout of Down's long-awaited soph try, the befittingly titled Down II. A one-third volume, Down III, followed in 2007.

'Shadow' cast on Toronto film festival

Thai film's director expects to stimulate controversy

TORONTO -- Monks with guns -- that's how Raymond Phathanavirangoon, Southeast Asian programmer at the Toronto International Film Festival, describes Phawat Panangkasiri's "In the Shadow of the Naga," a dramatic thriller he expects to generate contention here in September.

The Thai film, which portrays tercet criminals world Health Organization dress as monks to retrieve money they had buried below a tabernacle, is expected to pique devout Buddhists, Phathanavirangoon said of the world premiere.

"It's a commercial-grade film, merely it has monks that commit force and manipulation guns that they dot at the heads of people," he said.

Thai censors typically bar screenings of films that portray monks or the monarchy in a disrespectful manner.

As it released its Asian and Spanish-language titles, Toronto as well booked Japanese director Takeshi Kitano's "Achilles and the Tortoise" and Ryosuke Hashiguchi's "All Around Us" as well as "Machan," the debut feature of speech from "Full Monty" producer Uberto Pasolini.

Also Toronto-bound is Yu Lik-wai's Brazil-China co-production "Plastic City," a rare collaboration between Asian and South American partners that portrays Japanese immigrants scrambling to do occupation in the underbelly of Sao Paulo.

On the Spanish-language front, the festival also will give a high-profile Roy Thomson screening to Daniel Burman's "Empty Nest," an Argentinean-Spanish-Italian-French co-production that stars Cecilia Roth and Oscar Martinez.

Winehouse to perform at tonight's Brit Awards

The stars have been getting ready for tonight's Brit Awards, the biggest night in the UK music calendar.
Paul McCartney, Amy Winehouse, Kylie Minogue, Leona Lewis and Mark Ronson will all perform at the Earls Court event, which will be televised live.
McCartney, who will receive an Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, rehearsed his set yesterday.
Take That are expected to seal their triumphant comeback with a gong after scooping four nominations. 'X Factor' winner Lewis and flamboyant singer-songwriter Mika are up for the same number of awards.
Arctic Monkeys, uber-producer and performer Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs and Kate Nash are up for three awards each.
The show will be hosed by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne and will go out live on UTV. The couple will sit on thrones surrounded by two giant sculptures of dogs and a totem pole featuring a skull and gigantic bat, a reminder of Ozzy's infamous bat-eating incident.
This year's Brits will feature a "glam" stage with gold drapes and a punk stage adorned with a ripped Union Jack.
'Doctor Who' star David Tennant, actor Ian McKellen, Gossip singer Beth Ditto, and 'Bionic Woman' star Michelle Ryan are among the guest presenters.
Five times Grammy award-winner Winehouse is preparing to perform two numbers following her latest stay in rehab.
One of the songs will be 'Valerie', as part of a medley with Ronson, Adele and Daniel Merriweather.
But Winehouse has only one nomination - for her cover of The Zutons' 'Valerie' with Ronson - which is in the running for Best British Single.

Lewis will do battle for the Best British Female crown with Kate Nash, KT Tunstall, PJ Harvey and Bat for Lashes.
